The highly anticipated return of The Lion King is set for December this year.
Disney unveiled the trailer during its fan event, D23, held in California. Before the trailer’s release, audiences were treated to a preview of the film’s opening song, “I Always Wanted a Brother,” composed by renowned lyricist and actor Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Director Barry Jenkins then took the stage, sharing his deep connection to the classic story. “Like so many of you, The Lion King left an indelible mark on me,” he said. “The music, the emotions, the legacy passed from father to son, the renewal of the pride, and the journey of a young lion rising to his destiny—all of it resonated deeply. It’s an absolute honor to tell this story,” Jenkins added.
According to People, the film will delve into the life of young Mufasa, tracing his journey from an orphaned cub to one of the greatest kings. The story aims to provide a deeper understanding of his character, including the complex relationship with his brother, Taka, who later becomes the infamous Scar. The narrative is told through the reflective memories of the shaman Rafiki.
