Squid Game Might Not Be Over Yet Creators Reportedly Considering an American Spin-off Featuring a Major Hollywood Star

Though nothing has been officially confirmed, signs point to Netflix continuing to explore the Squid Game universe after the global phenomenon of the original series.

A potential American adaptation is rumored to be in the works, possibly starring Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett.

Talks of a spin-off titled Squid Squad America first surfaced in October last year. While Netflix has yet to comment on the speculation, the final scene of Season 3 gave fans a strong hint that the idea may be more than just wishful thinking.

In the closing moments of the finale, protagonist Gi-hun is seen transferring billions to his daughter in the U.S. As he walks away, he witnesses a mysterious woman—played by Blanchett—slapping a man in an alley while playing the traditional Korean game Ddakji, which was used to recruit players into the original Squid Game. The encounter mirrors the series’ beginning and suggests she may be recruiting for an American version of the deadly game.

It’s unclear whether the moment is simply a symbolic narrative closure or a deliberate teaser, similar to the post-credit “easter eggs” Marvel is known for. If a new series materializes, it wouldn’t be a remake, but a standalone story set in the United States, inspired by the same chilling premise of desperate people drawn into high-stakes survival games.

Series creator Hwang Dong-hyuk hasn’t ruled out the idea. “I don’t want to say I’m closing the door entirely on spin-offs or sequels never say never,” he told Entertainment Weekly.

According to a Deadline report from late last year, director David Fincher was being considered to helm the project. While there’s been no formal announcement yet, it seems likely that Netflix would be eager to build on the franchise’s massive success. And with subtle hints like Blanchett’s cameo, the streaming giant may already be laying the groundwork.
