We know Dumbledore as the wise and kind headmaster of Hogwarts and one of the most powerful wizards in the Harry Potter series. However, he didn’t see himself that way.
The Fantastic Beasts films, set in the Wizarding World, follow magizoologist Newt Scamander’s adventures. Taking place in the early 20th century, these stories reveal a darker time in magical history, including the rise of the dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald.
Actor Jude Law portrayed a young Dumbledore in two films from this series. He recently told Variety that this role may be ending, as Warner Bros. shifts its focus to an upcoming Harry Potter television series. Law enjoyed exploring Dumbledore’s complex character, with insights directly from J.K. Rowling. She revealed to him that Dumbledore considered himself a “monster,” grappling with an identity crisis over his past love for Grindelwald.
“Due to Dumbledore’s past, he felt a deep guilt for being deceived by someone he loved,” Law shared with Variety, describing Dumbledore’s turmoil. “He believed he was unlovable because he trusted his heart.” Law also reflected on the legendary duel with Grindelwald, a battle that tragically led to his sister’s death.
